how to find ORE in Lotro

Ore in Lotro, and where to find it

There are many types of ore to be found in Lotro's Middle Earth. In this section I will discuss all the types of ore, organized by Tiers, and - of course - where to find them in the huge LOTRO world.

Ore can be found everywhere in Middle Earth and the type of ore you encounter depends on a combination of a specific region and area which you are visiting. For example, you can find copper and silver both in the regionof the Shire, but they are located desperately in different areas. So, each area of Middle Earth [hit the M-key and you will see the map and the name of the area you are] has its own kind of ore, always of the same Tier, but sometimes of two different types.Copper and tin are - for example - of the same tier (tier 1), and can therefore be found in the same area. If you are looking for ore types of a higher tier, for example barrow-iron and silver (both tier 2), you have to travel to another area in the region. So, if you encounter only copper and tin (they are both tier 1), you are in the wrong area if you are searching for silver.

To localize and mine ore deposits, you need the prospector crafting skill. If you are a tinker, weaponsmith, armourer or explorer, you can track and mine ores.

Alas ... cooks, scholars, woodworkers and yeoman's cannot mine or track ores. They will see the ore deposits, but are unable to mine and process it.

A normal ore deposit (the location where the ore spawns is called a node) yield 1-3 ore chunks, while rich ore deposits will yield 4-6 chunks.

Rich ore deposits are on the maps marked by a thick red or blue margin (look at the Shire map). These kind of ore deposits will also drop - on an irregular basis - gems and dye products. At higher ties (6 and higher) they also may have very rare byproducts, like a mithril flake, a cracked Rhi sigil or a Tarnished Crest of Rohan. So, look out for the rich ore deposits and hold your breath!

An overview for the starter

In the table below you will find all the ore types which you can find in Lotro's Middle Earth. They are organized in Tiers. Tiers are a kind of processing levels, to be acquired by processing ore into ingots, which you can do at a forge (like a smithy). You will notice that each tier can be found in specific regions of specific areas. So, copper can be found in all of the starter areas, but for ancient iron you have to venture forth into the more dangerous areas.

Byproducts
While mining ore deposits, there is a chance that you will find also a byproduct, like some base materials for making dyes or precious stones like agates, opals and sapphires. The best chance to find such byproducts will give you the rich ore deposits, or in the case or rich iron, the bountiful deposits. In the table below you will find an overview of the most wanted byproducts per tier and ore type. Note: I haven't added byproduct-stuff that enhance crafting, like wetstones, brimstones and rock-salts.

Where to find ore in Lotro
This is the main section of my article, and it will discuss where to find all these different kind of ores.

Tips
  • Ore nodes are not random, they spawn near the same places. So use the maps!
  • Remember to mine every ore node of the same level. After harvesting everything, it can respawn different types of ore of that level. So at tier 4 it can be platinum or dwarf-iron, at tier 5 ancient iron or ancient silver, etc.

ORE IN THE SHIRE new!
Well, after some months I thought: lets start with the ore job! I started in the Shire, because it is an easy starter are to look for tin and copper. Although the map is not complete, it gives you a pretty good idea where to look for tin, copper, barrow iron and even silver and ... gold!

Gold in the Shire?? Oh yes, I found it in the upper eastern part of the shire, at the border of Evendim. It's still the Shire and the gold spot is located east of the Greenfields, directly at the shore of the Brandywine River.

But lets go back to copper and tin. The safest places to look for it is around Waymeet, east of Michel Delving and north of Tuckbborough. Around the letter place pretty much copper can be found. Just circle the fields and harvest your copper. After a while the copper-nodes re spawn and you can harvest a rich bounty of ore in a short time

Somewhat more dangerous, at least at a low level, is the Rushock Bog. Especially in the north, east of Needlehole there is a settlement of nasty Dourhands dwarves.

If you look closely south of Bywater, you see some tin/copper nodes. Actually it is the same node, and after a respawn it can produce a random ore: copper or tin. There are many of these flip-flop nodes in the Shire, even at places with barrow-iron/silver nodes. So the map is only an estimate from what I found during my ore pickings in the Shire. In conclusion I can tell you that some tin nodes on the map can be ore nodes, and visa verse. The same holds true for the barrow-iron and silver nodes. These can be found in the north part of the Bridgefields, around Scary (not in the mine itself, there is only some copper at the quarry) and at the Greenfields. These higher Tiers (2) are of course more dangerous areas than the fields with copper and tin.

Silver is a rare ore in Middle Earth, but if you search north of the Bridgefields and south of the Greenfield, some silver can be found. Be sure to mine the Barrow-iron too, since after some while at these nodes can also produce silver ore. The map shows you at least where most of the silver deposits can be found. Be aware: for a low level these tier 2 ore areas are a bit dangerous...

Have fun with the Shire  and don't hesitate to eat some apples, taters or honey, there is plenty of it around..

Ore and Wood

Ore

Ore deposits are found across the lands of Middle-earth. Prospectors have the ability to Track Mines, and process the ore using Prospector's Tools. Normal ore deposits yield 1 to 3 ore, while Rich/Bountiful ore deposits yield 4 to 6 ore and are more likely to also yield crafting materials such as dye materials, gems, and mastery components. Prospectors have the skill to smelt ore into ingots for other professions. Metalsmiths, Weaponsmiths, and Jewellers can use these ingots to craft items.

Wood

Wood can be found across the lands of Middle-earth. Foresters have the ability to Track Wood and harvest it using their Forester's Axe. Normal branches typically yield 1 to 3 branches, while heavy branches can yield up to 6 branches and occasionally kindling materials. Both types of branches can sometimes yield 1+ mastery components used by Tailors and Woodworkers. Foresters have the skill to treat wood for other professions. Other professions, such as Woodworker, can then create items from the treated wood.

Gathering Resources

Crafting materials are found throughout Middle-earth from Vendors, as loot drops or ground spawns, or in the assorted chests and crates around the world. Raw materials for crafting consist of ores, woods, gems, seeds, cooking supplies, dye components, hides and lore items.
Crafting resources (Ingredient Packs) are also available for purchase from the LOTRO Store.

  • Ores and woods are most commonly found as ground spawns, and if you have the gathering skill to collect them, you will have a tracking skill that you can activate to give you an indicator when you are near that resource. Ore nodes can also produce gems for Jewellers, and minerals for Scholars.
  • Seeds and cooking components can be purchased from Provisioners or tradesmen.
  • Hides are found as loot drops from many creatures.
  • Lore items are found as loot drops on humanoid enemies or in and around ruins inside ancient Artifacts.
All of these assorted materials can also be found in chests scattered throughout the landscape and in dungeons.
